Multi-instrumentalist and singer Elle Varner opened the Phi Beta Sigma fundraiser in the Dome on Friday night. The fraternity is celebrating 100 years in 2014. The headliner was J. Cole.
Michael Carter-Williams, the NCAA Division 1 assist-leader, is also beginning to score more (he netted 15 to go along with 16 assists against Monmouth on Saturday). The sophomore is also second in the nation in steals.
BCCE with Kirk Franklin
The legendary gospel collective known as the Black Celestial Choral Ensemble, or BCCE, celebrates its 35th anniversary this weekend. The BCCE will perform a concert on Saturday in Hendricks Chapel that will include an alumni section as well as guest directors.
Here is a small collection of photographs that have appeared on the SIF site in the past seven years or so from their various annointed performances.

We got a chance to speak with BCCE Director Byron Canada before the concert, and he talked about the history of the group and the significance of this particular anniversary.

Hon. Dave Bing, Mayor of Detroit, gives the keynote address at Syracuse University’s 27th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.
The theme for this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at Syracuse University was “A Living Legacy: The Fierce Urgency of Now.” The event featured performances by Dance Theater of Syracuse, BCCE, and a keynote address by the Hon. Dave Bing, the Mayor of Detroit, who graduated from SU 2 years before Dr. King’s assassination.

Last night in the Carrier Dome, Cleveland State stunned the 11th-ranked Syracuse University Men’s Basketball team and handed them their first loss via the sweetest buzzer-beater 60ft bank shot I’ve ever seen (courtesy of CSU’s Cedric Jackson). The shot stunned the crowd following a very evenly-matched contest where there were several lead changes during the second half.
Equally exciting for me was seeing my former college roommate and CSU Associate Head Coach Jayson Gee for the first time in nearly 20 years. He remains one of the best basketball minds on the college scene.
Gee has also served as a wonderful mentor (despite the differences in our career paths). Without knowing it, he helped lay the foundation for this current venture.
Thanks for the tickets Gee. Continued success.
