Lourdes Zapata, Executive Vice President, Division of Minority & Women’s Business Development at Empire State Development, spoke at yesterday’s MWBE Expo of Central New York. The event was held at the South Side Innovation Center.
New York is slated for plenty of redevelopment, including airports, transportation hubs, tourism/welcome centers, as well as clean energy initiatives, in nearly every part of the state. All these projects are scheduled to be assessed for minority and women business (MWB) goal settings.
Zapata told a room full of either certified or aspiring minority and women business firms to pay attention to these types of projects because “these are where the opportunities are coming in the future.”

Attorney Jose Perez
About a decade ago Jose Perez was delivering pizzas. But these days, the Ithaca-born, Venezuela-raised attorney is getting his clients sweet deals for personal injury, immigration and business contracts. He talked about his personal journey during an entrepreneur forum sponsored by The Upstate Minority Economic Alliance (UMEA) on Friday. The event was held at the Southside Innovation Center.
Perez also shared some business advice. Here are some of his tips for getting the most from your next negotiation:
- Present a concrete case
- Prepare for disputes
- Consider unconventional deal structuring
- Don’t be afraid to leave the table
- Bring the big guns (use leverage when necessary)
- Avoid quick fixes

Outside in the Rain: The Blacklites
After a weather-related cancellation last week, the Jazz in the City program kicked off today, accompanied by showers. But the Blacklites, veteran showmen of Syracuse music scene, put enough funk back into the atmosphere to stop the rain.
After their first set, the skies broke for a Southside party led by the KC Cuse Line Dance group.
The Great Carsoni (right) finds a dance partner to follow his groove.
The next Jazz in the City concert is scheduled for Thursday on the Westside.
KC Cuse Line Dance keeps the party going.

John Izzo
John Izzo is staying true to his roots. He is the son of an Italian immigrant and describes bittersweet memories of getting his hands dirty in the family garden as a child.
As he came of age however, his trade became engineering. But he didn’t let that work bury his dreams. These days wine is his passion.
In about a year Izzo purchased land in Cayuga County and co-founded White Barn Winery with his wife Lorraine. They both hope to transition someday (soon) to have the winery as their full time pursuit.
In the sound clip below Izzo suggests that aspiring entrepreneurs assemble a Dream Team to help start, support and sustain their business/vision. One of his mentors is Chris Scholomiti at CJS Vineyards.
Izzo was the latest presenter for the Start-Up NY Extraordinary Speaker series held at the Southside Innovation Center (SSIC) earlier this week.
