Vegetable Delight (Kitchen Series)
Thanks to the customer service department of the Dewitt Barnes & Noble for unveiling for us the newly arrived The Photography of the Modernist Cuisine by Nathan Myhrvold recently. The coffee-table book, which may be more dense and than a coffee table itself, features the perfect blend of science, photography and gastronomy. The macro shots, microscopic shots and high-speed shots are captured in Myhrvold’s lab/kitchen using a variety of cameras puts a new-school, almost Gladwellian spin on previous a previous work by Charles Jones. Here is a clip of Myhrvold talking to Charlie Rose this week about the project. The book is a great gift idea for all you photographers, scientists or body builders.

M.I.N.D. Lab: Shaping a new perception of reality in Downtown Syracuse.
Here are some photos from last night’s open house for the Newhouse School’s M.I.N.D. Lab, which is located in the AXA Towers (ground floor). Special shout out to Danushka Bandara, grad student and science guy, who demystified the workings and practical applications for many of the center’s devices. Would love to see someone from this group do a TEDx series or similar symposium.

Majora Carter, environmental justice advocate and green collar entrepreneur
Environmental justice advocate and green collar entrepreneur Majora Carter visited Syracuse yesterday and spoke for the University lecture series at Hendricks Chapel. She detailed how cities can turn financial disinvestment and environmental degradation into movements for equality and recognition of environmental assets.
Carter had really good things to say about Syracuse, especially the Near West Side Initiative. Her talk wasn’t very long so it’s understandable that she didn’t address Onondaga Creek or the Syracuse University Steam Station.
Wilson Park
I first heard about Carter after her TED Talk a few years ago.
Her organization (Majoracartergroup.com) now promotes micro agribusiness development through green roofs and urban greenhouses.
