Howard University (Washington, DC) will announce the naming of the “Cathy Hughes School of Communications” at an official ceremony on Sunday.

I got a chance to check out the inaugural show for mixed media artist and activist, George Kilpatrick, Sr. on Saturday. The show,held at the Community Folk Art Center (CFAC), was attended by community members, artists, as well as the Kilpatrick family.
Media personality George Kilpatrick, Jr. opened the show by reading a poem his dad wrote called “The Artist.” George’s sister Sherri Kilpatrick Duchenne also told a story about how her dad taught the family to harness the power of the pen.
George Kilpatrick, III, a student studying at Howard Unviersity, representing third generation of the family, sang a soulful rendition of “Yesterday,” which reminded me a lot of the Donny Hathaway version.

Dr. Ron Walters, speaking at Syracuse University in 2007
Renowned political scientist Dr. Ron Walters passed away last week.
Walters graduated from Fisk University in 1964 and earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from American University. He taught at the University of Maryland, Howard, Brandeis and Syracuse Universities.
He last spoke at SU in 2007 (pictured above).
Filmmaker Haile Gerima (below) visited Syracuse to screen his film Teza last week during the Grassroots Media Convention.
I previously covered Chuck D when he spoke at the Convention a few years ago.

Teza is a very intimate portrait of a man who comes of age during the modernization of Ethiopia.
The deep exploration of character in Teza reminds me a lot of Charles Burnett’s films.
Gerima, who teaches at Howard University, says criticism and analysis are the bridge that joins the artist and the community.
“Cinema is not benign entertainment, but don’t confuse noise with culture,” he said.
