Friday, January 6th, 2017The Sunday Jazz Brunch
Sunday, October 2nd, 2016When we first experienced Melissa Gardiner’s skills at the Jazz @ Sitrus series a few years ago, we saw her as the hardest working lady in Syracuse show business. Then we considered her numerous titles: bandleader, teacher, vocalist, all-around molder of musical consensus, working mother, and noticed how she always exceeded expectations. Now we are beginning think that maybe she is a superhero.
Today Gardiner played the role of host for the come as you are (especially with your instrument) event known as Jazz Jam at Funk-n-Waffles.
Jazz Jam may be the city music scene’s best kept weekend secret. The event is in a great perfect (Downtown), during a great time slot (3pm-5pm) and at a great venue (casual bistro) for the enjoyment of a long-time resident or first-time tourist. Imagine a music series that features the perfect blend of students, educators, and jazz aficionados, but where music is only half the story, because what goes better with hot jazz riffs than an abundant selection of sweet and savory waffles?
Today the house was packed, and the soiree featured horn players, singers, and at least one cajon drum.
The Jazz Jam/Funk-n-Waffles combo has a bright future.
Special shout-out to drummer Bryon Cage: Thanks for the invite and tip about the wonderful waffle fries.

Tuesday, September 1st, 2015Week in Review: Sophisticated and Primal
Sunday, June 21st, 2015Our performance of the week goes to Ronnie Leigh and Melissa Gardiner’s MG3. Below is a clip from their final number (Aint Misbehavin‘ with Leigh on vocals), which is so rich and velvety it gets stuck between your ears.
Thanks again to Byron Cage for the invite.
Sounds over Sushi
Friday, June 19th, 2015We got to see a few generations of musical performers at Melissa Gardiner’s gig at Tokyo-Seoul last night. Her MG3 band, along with veteran vocalist Ronnie Leigh, made for a sweltering combination.
Leigh, who is the equivalent of a made guy in the music scene here (our version of Tony Bennett), has been around for years and has multiple SAMMY Awards. But don’t let his musical mileage fool you however, because he still had enough in reserve to close the show with a Fats Waller cut (“Aint Misbehavin”) that had the ebbing energy of a strong summer storm.
Our take-away question is this: has anyone recorded these sessions (which began in December)? They would make a great compilation CD.
Capture the Cuse (XVI)
Monday, April 20th, 2015All Aboard
Friday, April 10th, 2015We don’t know where the after party was for Syracuse Fashion Week last night, but maybe it should have been held at the Empire Brewing Company. We followed the sound of music in Armory Square, and it lead us to the Slow Train CD release show.
A packed house included guest musicians and some familiar faces. We look forward to seeing them again soon. Slow Train will travel to Rochester for their next show.
Thanks to Byron Cage for the invite.
