Wednesday, April 1st, 2015Here are some of the photos from Taraji P. Henson’s visit to Syracuse University. She talked about her work in films and television, particularly the success of her new show Empire and the fortitude it takes to pursue a career in show business. She said she’s had the most fun in her career so far on the film Talk to Me (the Petey Greene biopic). Henson will host Saturday Night Live April 11.
Humanitarian trumps Hollywood
Friday, March 27th, 2015Despite the fact that has an Academy Award, Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award, Forest Whitaker may still be one of the most underrated actors of his generation. The guy has always made an impression in film roles, such as Good Morning Vietnam, where he mixed-it up with Robin Williams to The Butler, where he embodied the class and stoic dignity of Cecil Gaines. And who can forget his more lighthearted characters like Jefferson (Fast Times at Ridgemont High) and Jackson (A Rage in Harlem).
Verbal Acuity in American Characters
Wednesday, March 26th, 2014Anna Deavere Smith breathed life into several characters during her lecture/performance at Syracuse University on Tuesday afternoon. She almost perfectly embodied the conversational cadence and idioms of former Gov. Anne Richards, Rep. John Lewis and theologian Peter Gomes for about an hour.
Maybe her most impressive role was portraying prisoner Paulette Jenkins for a piece called “Mirror to her Mouth”. This sobering tale, filled with domestic violence, murder and regret, moved the crowd toward an almost religious silence.
Wandering Women Can Wear Nude Shoes
Wednesday, November 20th, 2013“Creating When We Were Wanderers required actors to excavate and mine their personal experiences…” Ryan Johnson-Travis, Director
Bravo to director and actor Ryan Johnson-Travis. The theater man continues to write, direct and produce some creative stage work along the Connective Corridor Arts District. His latest conception, “When We Were Wanderers” closed tonight to a packed house at the Community Folk Art Center’s Black Box Theater. The play touched on a plethora of emotions, and honestly explored race and gender from a female perspective.
Later this weekend brothers will grace the stage at CFAC for the CNY Mocha Men production by Me’Shae Brooks Rolling. The Mocha Men event will focus on financial literacy.
Being Brian Dennehy
Saturday, October 5th, 2013Seasoned actor Brian Dennehy, whose son attends Syracuse University, was a special guest for the Friday night portion of Orange Central. He was joined in conversation and an occasional gut-busting laugh by Syracuse Stage’s Timothy Bond.
The event was held at the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium (Newhouse complex).
During the hour-long program, Dennehy gave numerous anecdotes about writers Jimmy Breslin and Frank McCourt, as well as actors Kevin Kline and Zero Mostel.
He discuseed his numerous roles in film, television and his first love, regional theater. “What happens in the theater can only happen in the theater,” he said.
Dennehy, whose career spans five decades, also gave a reading, told some jokes, and even sang during a musical interlude with pianist Jeff Sawyer (an SU grad).
