We miss the days of the Dorsey Levens Foundation 3-on-3 basketball tournaments held in Syracuse during the early 2000s.

On this first day of March Madness we do a roll call of some of the great college point guards that were raised or played in the Cuse…The Pearl, Jason Buchanan, Lazarus Sims, Tyler Ennis, Rick Brunson, Sherman Douglas, Jason Hart, Dave Cain, Billy Edelin, Craig Kowadla, and Edwin Moss.

Julius “Pop” Anderson floats to the basket for a lay-up in the final minute of the second half.
This is the second time they’ve met in two years, so maybe you could call it revenge that Showtime (Orange) defeated Flav’s Unit (Red) to claim the BBBL (Baby Boomers Basketball League) title at the McChesney Recreation Center yesterday. Behind the steady play of Dave Cain and Julius “Pop” Anderson, Showtime won a hard-fought, low-scoring victory 47-39. Flav’s Unit beat Showtime last season (when the league was being held at the Southwest Community Center).
The crowd, which included businessmen, families and former college athletes, seemed to route for league elder statesman Julius “Pop” Anderson.
Well maybe not everyone, since retired BBBL Commissioner James Jackson was also in the house (and his son Derrick plays for Flav).
Speculation began immediately after the game whether Anderson would return next year for another repeat title.
Surely Flav will have something to say about that…Showtime may have won this year, but this rivalry is just getting started.

Showtime point guard Dave Cain addresses the team during a time-out.

Don Crouch (center) and Flav’s Unit turned up their man-to-man defense pressure to close the gap in the second half.

Gil Spaights (Flav’s Unit) questions a close call.

Morehouse College Sports and Journalism Program Director Ron Thomas spoke about the genesis of the NBA and how it was integrated during a visit to the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications on Thursday.
Ron Thomas shared stories from his book They Cleared the Lane with SU students and faculty this week. His exhaustive research highlights ballers such as Chuck Cooper, Bucky Lew and Cleo Hill. Thomas, who grew up in Buffalo and went to college in Rochester, is a former NBA beat-writer, turned author and educator. His talk was part of an event produced by Syracuse University’s Sports Media Center.
Thomas also posed one of the most clever sports trivia questions out there: Who was the NBA’s first player? (there’s more than one answer, so read the book)
On Friday, Thomas continued his labor of love by attending a ceremony in West Virginia that featured a tribute to Earl Lloyd.
Quest for Perfection
Wednesday, February 26th, 2014
Not everyone in Syracuse has given up on an undefeated season. Last weekend we found out about another Team Orange that is doing work on the court at the East Fayette Street Boys & Girls Club. The Syracuse Team for Biddy Basketball, coached by Dean Crouch, remained the top seed as they used pressure defense, superior guard play and backboard dominance to dispose of Marquette on Saturday. The team, made up of children from the SCSD, is now 7-0, and retains a number one ranking heading into the playoffs.
The plot line for the game included best friends turned rivals, and even brother against brother on the sidelines (Dean’s brother Danard is Marquette’s coach). Syracuse may have won by double digits, but the game was certainly competitive.
We wish Syracuse the best as they barrel toward perfection.

Michael Carter-Williams makes his case
Shout out to former Orangeman Michael Carter-Williams who produced a stat stuffer supreme tonight with 22 points, 9 rebounds, 12 assists and 9 steals. MCW’s 76ers defeated the defending champion Miami Heat. The steals mark set an NBA rookie debut record.

Paul Kentoffio and Basil Anastassiou meet with supporters after a screening of their film in Manlius.
We just may have seen the logical follow up (but not quite the sequel) to the highly-acclaimed film “Hoop Dreams.” Only this time there’s a local connection.
Educators, ballers (men and women), television-personalities and government officials nearly filled the Manlius Art Cinema on Friday to catch a screening of “Ballin’ at the Graveyard” and hear from the filmmakers (Basil Anastassiou-a SU alum and Paul Kenoffio).
As an added bonus two of the principals in the documentary Gerald Malcolm (aka G) and Jarming White (aka Boozer) also attended and talked about the experience of having a film crew dissect court culture and their lives away from the game.
The Manlius screening was part of a barnstorm thru the state-heading next to Rochester then Buffalo.
The filmmakers said they were looking into a larger distribution avenue or increased exposure.
In our opinion, “Ballin’ at the Graveyard” transcends hoops in many ways. Trash-talk and nuances of pick-up ball translate easily to the screen, but what makes great documentary is further excavation to reveal multi-dimensional characters.
The filmmakers seemed to have aced the art. Our hope is now they get the marketing right and more people get to see this film.

Baller, actor and author Gerald Malcolm (aka G) answered questions after a showing of Ballin at the Graveyard in Manlius.

Edwin “Eddie” Moss, baller, SU alum, publisher (circa 2005)
As SU gets ready to enter the Atlantic Coast Conference this season, we remember Edwin “Eddie” Moss. Moss was a point guard for SU and ushered them into the Big East back in 1979. He later became a newspaper publisher. He’s pictured here in 2005 (the same year he passed away). May he rest in peace.
