NYS Fair (Day 6): Rising Strong

Brandon Ellis Dance Works

Tueday’s best show at the New York State Fair was easily Brandon Ellis Dance Works at the Pan African Village. The one-hour show featured work choreographed by Ellis and Dominique Dawkins that was fluid, innovative, energetic and modern, but with a certain level of sophisticated theater and art synonymous with the top dance companies. From the top (above) are the pieces we experienced: “Cosmic Love,” “Face of Medusa,” and “Beetle Juice.”  The group is scheduled to perform at the State Fair again on Thursday.

Alex Torres and his Latin Orchestra warmed up for the NYS Fair by jamming at Jazz in the City.

Jazz in the City (part 3)

Friday, August 21st, 2015

Sure it was hot; sure the party got forced inside due to the rain; and sure the summer is nearly over, but the party must continue…

And that’s just what happened inside the St. Lucy’s Auditorium, as Jazz in the City stormed onto the Westside scene last night. The night was memorable thanks to some upbeat, tropical sounds from Alex Torres and his Latin Orchestra, as well as some great dancing by instructors from La familia de La Salsa.

For a few hours the far side of the Connective Corridor was full of the joyous kind of celebration that conjures up memories of never-ending summer evenings.

Just in case you missed it, the final Jazz in the City is schedule for Sept 3, and Alex Torres will be performing next week at the NYS Fair.

Throwback Thursday

When Alex Torres (far left) comes to town with his band, they certainly bring the party with them. They will appear at Jazz in the City tonight on the Westside.

Bernie, by Otto the Orange

During yesterday’s Multicultural Block Party on the Near Westside, SU’s mascot and SU’s DJ had people in Skiddy Park (from kids to politicians) dancing. Both Otto and DJ Maestro were in mid-season form.
