Connect, then Lead

Lugendo Muya and Kirsten Ranallo (background), co-leaders of the Yellow Team of Synterns, present their project details at the Upstate Graduation/Final Boardroom Challenge.

Here are some photographs from the SYNERGY 2013 graduation, which was held at SUNY Upstate Medical Center last week.  This year’s diverse class of students interned for the summer at local area firms and developed problem-solving business projects.

The winner of this year’s Business Challenge was Team Yellow.

SYNERGY is a program of Mercy Works, Inc.

“There’s a lot that’s been said and written about the decline of older Upstate communities…But like old houses,  caring for them is clearly a labor of love.”
Linda Dickerson Hartsock (On Main Street)

This is part one of our conversation with the Connective Corridor’s Linda Dickerson Hartsock. Her work has blended revitalization with historic preservation.

Thanks to Bill Horrace and his band for the intro and credit tunes, which were recorded live on Centro’s Connective Corridor Bus (443).

Omanii Abdullah, poet, educator and businessman (performing at the former OnaJava Cafe)

Syracuse is a city of families. On this Throwback Thursday I want to give some dap to the Grace family. Each summer poet, educator and actor Omanii Abdullah sets up his hot dog stand near my office.  He’s as famous for his country-style lemonade as he is for his spoken word performances.  Omanii has specials at his stand, and one of my favorites is the Uncle Vince. It’s named for his brother Vincent Grace, who sadly passed away a few years ago. Vincent was a karate master who influenced a generation of fighters here in the city.

Muhammad School of Music visits Syracuse (center Henri Muhammad and Min. Mark Muhammad)

The Muhammad School of Music visited Syracuse from Buffalo (center Min. Mark Muhammad and Henri L. Muhammad) and held a rehearsal before their performance.

Here are two scenes inside the Merchants Common Building (downtown). The Muhammad School of Music visited the School of the heARTS about a decade ago, and currently the Syracuse Media Group (and Post Standard) has nearly completed their move to the property.
