Vanessa Williams, Icon of Style
Syracuse University alum, singer, actress and former Miss America Vanessa Williams was presented with the 2011 Icon of Style Award last night at JP Morgan Chase, One Chase Manhattan Plaza.
Williams, along with Coach Jim Boeheim, Chancellor Nancy Cantor, attended the event and watched a fashion show featuring the work of 12 students from Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts.
Here are photographs from the previous Icon of Style Award presentation and show we covered a few years ago.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo speaks at Onondaga Community College (OCC)
On the Syracuse stop for his “People First” campaign/tour at Onondaga Community College (OCC), Gov. Andrew Cuomo touted the success of his initial 100 days in office. He said he will continue in his quest to bring ethical reform to the Empire State, along with economic stability (via property tax cap) and social progress (via marriage equality).
Meanwhile opponents of same-sex marriage say they will fight attempts at marriage equity legislation.

Should it stay or should it go?
This week there are a series of public workshops to assess the future of Route 81, which is a few blocks from our offices.

Marjory Wilkins (right)
Syracuse lost one of its best known photographers last week.
Marjory Wilkins, who passed away at age 81, used her camera to richly document people, places, and events in our city. One of my favorite of her photos is of former Syracuse Police officer Willie Gilbert.
Mrs. Wilkins is pictured here at a show that celebrated her work a few years ago.

We will certainly miss her activism, insight and talents.
