Throwback Thursday

Gregory Porter at Jazz Fest

This Throwback Thursday post is all about Fantastic Friday. The first night of 33rd Annual Syracuse Jazz Fest is tomorrow, and if history is any indicator, you just can’t sleep on the splashes of surprise and brilliance that those opening night’s provide.

These photos are from a memorable Friday night at Jazz Fest 2012 (when the event was held at Jamesville Beach). Kenny G seemed to appear magically in the middle of the crowd that night, then marched toward the stage playing with harmonic precision. And of course, as we’ve stated before, the Porter debut in CNY was one of our favorite Jazz Fest performances ever. He sang so good we could almost couldn’t stand it.

We can’t wait for the surprises Frank Malfitano and his staff have up their sleeve tomorrow. Remember last year on Friday when Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Trombone Shorty provided a healthy slice of New Orleans at Jazz Fest?

For this 33rd edition of the Art of Photography we give you a throwback from the 2009 Jazz Festival. Here a fan snaps a picture of Kenny G as he signs autographs. Check the flip phone and the steady hand. The 33rd Annual Jazz Fest kicks off tomorrow at OCC.

Bravo to Frank Malfitano for putting together what sounds like another great line up for Syracuse Jazz Fest. This year’s festival features Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, and Lake Street Drive.

Once again the festival is free.

The Friday night shows at Jazz Fest have become legendary (Trombone Shorty, Gregory Porter, Preservation Hall Jazz Band), and this year we are particularly interested in seeing the evening sizzle with a combination of Marsalis and Buckwheat Zydeco.

To see Buckwheat Zydeco at a New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest back in the day check this out:

Preservation Hall Jazz Band (at Jazz Fest)

Preservation Hall Jazz Band (at Jazz Fest)

We have enjoyed the HBO documentary series Foo Fighters Sonic Highways,  particularly the most recent edition that highlights New Orleans. We are thankful that many of the musicians featured (such as The Preservation Hall Jazz Band) on that episode have come through Syracuse for some amazing shows.

Here’s an extended clip with Trombone Shorty, who was the star of last summer’s Syracuse Jazz Festival.

Raul Midon at the 2014 Syracuse Jazz Festival

We are starting our 2015 wish list early.

Hopefully singer, songwriter and composer Raul Midon gets invited back to Syracuse soon.  He put on a great show Saturday as a soulful one-man sound machine, but we think to fully appreciate the complexities of his talents and the nuance of his genius, he should to be featured in the Legends of Jazz Series at OCC.
