Singer Ola Onabule stormed into the Cuse on Sunday (Sheraton Hotel)
We are so glad Olatunji, Olubenga, Omotayo, Olanrewaju, Adetokunbo, Abdul, Majeed, Onabule (also known as Ola or Ola Onabule) made Syracuse a part of his tour. He brought his multi-octave mixture of soul, jazz and world-beat to the CNY Jazz Arts Foundation’s Cabaret Series yesterday. He will do smaller performances today at Lemoyne and Tuesday at SU.
Although the near-capacity crowd (SU Men Basketball played in the NCAA Tourney at the same time as the performance) was well entertained by his talents, we’d love to see Ola Onabule return for a larger venue concert, such as Clinton Square, in the future.
These days a party’s just not a party until Second Line Syracuse meanders on through. They did just that during the Festival of the Fantastical Follicle last Friday. When they show up it’s always Mardi Gras or Carnival!
Mike Heagerty kept time for the band as they descended to the lobby.
Dan Fields tried to blow the roof off the Landmark.
Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, fresh from his interview with Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton, spoke at SUNY Oswego on Wednesday. Afterwards, he checked out the smooth, yet potent sounds of Dr. Alphonso Sanders (right) at AL’s on South Clinton Street. Sanders will be playing gigs in Oswego this week as well. More on his performance and the plethora of guests coming soon.
Wouter Kellerman, who visited Syracuse to play the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival in 2012, is nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for this year’s Grammys.
Vocalist Sherma Andrews will be appearing at the Legendary Lady Singers Cabaret in Syracuse Sunday. She is pictured here at last year’s Northeast Jazz and Wine Festival with Live Space Entertainment Executive Producer Tom Honan.
We salute Melissa Gardiner and her mates for taking Second Line from concept to execution, and now award-winning recognition. They were named Best Jazz Band in the latest Syracuse New Times Best of Syracuse survey. Here’s the band showing some reggae flavor during one of their neighborhood visits from the summer:
When Alex Torres (far left) comes to town with his band, they certainly bring the party with them. They will appear at Jazz in the City tonight on the West Side.
