Columnist Sean Kirst explains how one story becomes another story at TEDx Syracuse University.
We’ve seen him speak to community groups and interview celebrities, but deep down we think Sean Kirst is a griot, a storyteller. As a columnist/writer Kirst is a great mix of Gay Talese, Bob Greene and Pete Hamill, but at tonight’s TEDx event, he would have given six-figure keynote speakers such as Malcolm Gladwell a run for the money. In 20 minutes Kirst told what we think is possibly the most memorable tale (minus scandal) we’ve heard pertaining to this region.
Do yourself a favor, when they post the video, make sure to check out “At the Lighthouse…”

Syracuse Chiefs came home to defend their division crown under mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures yesterday.
Here are a few photographs from yesterday’s home opener for the Syracuse Chiefs.
Syracuse Silver Knights defender Nelson (Nelly) Santana came to show his support, and was in the running for best hat at the ballpark.
Mariah Adigun attended the game with her family and sang the National Anthem.
Smokin: 96-year old Betty Sterzer, a Chiefs fan for generations, threw out a ceremonial first pitch.
Tony Gwynn Jr. got a great reception from the Syracuse crowd during introductions.
Hope Springs Eternal: Opening Day is all about optimism and infectious enthusiasm.
Shortstop Emmanuel Burriss turns a bunt into an infield single in the bottom of the third inning.
Opening Day is always about the fans, but by the time the sun had set, the Chiefs defeated Scranton/WB 10-2.

Nina Davuluri, Miss America 2014 spoke Syracuse University on Tuesday.
Although she is no longer the reining Miss America, Nina Davuluri continues to do the work. The four pillars of the organization are: advocacy, scholarship, style and success. Davuluri says a lot of ladies want to be Miss America, but they don’t want the job.
Beyond encouraging women to pursue careers in STEM fields, she hopes to one day be a diplomat or ambassador.
Talk about role model for your daughter…

Veteran sports reporter ( and SU alum) Rich Cimini
We went to see Rich Cimini not because he has some great stories about Bill Parcels, Rex Ryan and Jim Boheheim; not because he’s covered 24 Super Bowls and over 400 NFL games, but we went to say thank you. Cimini pulled us in on a story he was doing back in the day about Laveranues Coles and Steve Yarnell.
Cimini’s gesture helped us tremendously that year. Thanks Rich.
Also kudos to Professor John Nicholson, from the Newhouse Sports Media Center, who each year puts together a great roster of sports reporters to visit Syracuse and talk about their craft.
