We saw the recent Movoto story  that ranked Syracuse #5 out of 10 for America’s most exciting mid-sized cities. One of the factors listed in the ranking was “Active life options per capita, ” which reminds us how much we anticipate the outdoor festival season coming this summer.

The American Bible Society ranked Syracuse as one of the least Bible-minded cities in the U.S. (#86 out of 100), but before you feel less than blessed remember Acts 28:12.

Walk This Way

Step by Step: East Fayette Street

Step by Step: East Fayette Street

We read the recent Huffington Post piece that said about 1 out of 10 Syracuse residents walk to work.  Our city earned the number nine spot in the top 10 walkable U.S. cities.  We wonder if the ranking could be done on a curve since most of the metros on the list receive less snow than Syracuse.

One assist for the walking (and bike) culture can be credited to the implementation of the Connective Corridor.  Here’s a recent post by The Syracuse Media Group’s Dave Tobin that gives some background on the next phase of the Corridor project.

Shake Shack, Washington, DC

Washington, buy viagra DC

We saw a poll this morning online and were not surprised that data showed Chick Fil-A is the most desired fast food franchise here in Central New York.  Another one of our favorites is Danny Meyer’s Shake Shack.  Shake Shack is not a franchise, but would be a great addition to Armory Square or the Connective Corridor.

Centro's SU to Destiny Route

Centro’s SU to Destiny Route: Congestive Headway Failure

Check out this recent post on Syracuse Urban Properties (aka Syrup) about using a trolley or tram to bring visitors from DestiNY USA to downtown.  We are in favor of that scenario, and would also recommend reviving OnTrack service through the city.

Anyone who’s ridden Centro’s jam-packed SU-Destiny Route on a Friday evening would agree. OnTrack would certainly be beneficial during any construction or demolition of Route I81.

Face the Future

More than 2 million refugees have arrived in the United States since the Refugee Act of 1980 was established, driven from their homelands by war, political change, and social, religious and ethnic oppression…In medium-sized and smaller metropolitan areas, refugees can have considerable impact on the local population…The leading refugee destination metro areas have shifted away from traditional immigrant gateways over the past two decades, while newer gateways are resettling proportionally more refugees.

In 2012, The Onondaga Citizens League explored the refugee experience in Central New York.  A summary of the results were published in a report called The World at our Doorstep. Some of the great recommendations included creating a Refugee Resource Center, developing a World Market Square/Village and convening a Refugee Health Task Force.

Here are a few more points we should consider for new citizens (coming from the other side of the world or from across the country)

  • Let them be themselves
  • Identify and magnify their strengths
  • Let them know what is going on
  • Make them proud to be here
  • Don’t hinder them with obtuse rules
  • Give them meaningful work

Earlier this week at a public meeting, SU Chancellor Nancy Cantor called Syracuse a “city of opportunity.”

Welcome to a new kind of Syracuse story.

Paul Saffo discussed recently in Wired that there are four indicators to anticipate change: 1) contradictions; 2) inversions; 3) oddities and 4) coincidences.
