Sitrus Series regulars Mike and Sharon Colabufo danced to the sounds of Mike and Anjela Lynn at the Sheraton Hotel on Friday.  The series isn’t a true party until the Colabufo’s grace the floor. The final set for Mike and Anjela included clever covers of Michael Jackson, Daft Punk and Robin Thicke.

The house band at Phoebe’s Garden Cafe (Josh Dekaney, Max McKee and Mark Nanni) welcomed SU Junior Stephanie Mata (from Rome, NY) to the Thursday night party.  Their diverse jam session was well attended by students and some of the post theater crowd from Syracuse Stage. DJ Spooky In Concert: Happening

DJ Spooky In Concert: Sonification

So this is what edge-craft sounds like…

After seeing the DJ Spooky concert we are convinced he was influenced by Pharaoh Sanders or Sun Ra.  His futuristic, genre-bending show took the definition of mixing to the far reaches of anything Hip Hop has seen. In a toned-down exhibition that included a commentary/listening party, DJ Spooky blending the sounds of nature with club beats and the live musicianship of the Central New York Jazz Orchestra (including Brett Zvacek and Joe Davoli).

DJ Spooky (aka Paul Miller): Sound Scholar

DJ Spooky (aka Paul Miller): Sound Scholar

Paul D. Miller (aka DJ Spooky) is not your typical DJ. Think of him as part Steve Jobs, part Dr. Yusef A. Lateef, part Spike Lee (mixed with touch of Jazzy Jeff). Miller came to the CRAVE Festival in Syracuse on Friday gave a lecture about his love of sampling, vintage vinyl records, quantum physics, open source program development, and the current age of mass customization. Miller showcased his recent work, which was inspired by a trip to Antarctica.

He said he plans to use his platform as an artist/explorer to leverage cultural capital to protect human rights and the environment.

In addition to scoring films, Miller is also the narrator for an app for one of my favorite artists, Romare Bearden. Check back for photos of his Saturday night concert.
