Nate Hommel, urban designer
Nate Hommel says that streets are public spaces. During a workshop and didactic session at Assumption Church, the Director of planning and design for University City District (UCD) told residents, students, and developers to hack, tinker, analyze and design to help transform spaces and help people love where they live. When you love where you live, he said, you start caring a lot more about things that go on and you become more involved.
Hommel is pictured at a the Freedom Garden on N. Townsend, which is a few stone throw away from where he was born (St. Joseph’s Hospital).
He is a graduate of SUNY ESF and has worked for UCD since 2012.

The line up for the 35th Annual Syracuse Jazz Fest was released during a press conference this afternoon at M&T Bank. At the podium Jazz Fest producer Frank Malfitano readies for media questions.
Thirty-five is halfway between 20 and 50, so the line-up for the 2017 Syracuse Jazz Festival includes some old school and some new school. The line up includes the following:
- Ramsey Lewis
- Rebirth Jazz Band
- Todd Rundgren
- Asleep at the Wheel
- Marc Broussard
- The Mavericks

Liam Kirst (center) of the Land Bank talked about a new mural program that will be applied to abandoned and dilapidated homes in the city. He was a guest, along with his father and Logan Reidsma, at the F.O.C.U.S. Forum on Friday morning.

The Sumner Hunt Building is an example of Second Empire Style architecture. Southside TNT and Syracuse Model Neighborhood Facility, Inc. held an open house at the newly rehabbed space on Friday.
