Duke won the NCAA title in men’s basketball earlier this week in Indianapolis. For SU fans who are still sore that the Orange didn’t participate in this year’s Big Dance, let us remind you of the school’s academic reputation. During last night’s 8th Annual Fashion & Beauty Communications Milestone show, the Newhouse School fielded a formidable, yet fashionable team of world-class journalism professors.
Take that Duke.
Your Turn: It has been reported that comedy writing veteran Larry Wilmore will replace Stephen Colbert on Comedy Central (when he takes over the Late Show). Wilmore participated in a public forum with Professor Charisse L'Pree at The Newhouse School's Hergenhan Auditorium earlier this year.
Yvonne Conte-A Sophisticated Queen of Comedy
Though she is a public speaker now (and trains others in public speaking), Conte was once a stand-up comic.
From the time she began her talk…well, actually her talk began with a joke about a scheduling mistake…Conte worked the crowd like she was doing a SNL monologue.
Conte talked about the happiness advantage and how it relates to work place enthusiasm, and eventually productivity. She even allotted a portion of her time for the crowd to literally hold their bellies and belt out a laugh.
All TED talks should be this fun.
The inaugural TEDx event in Syracuse played to a packed house last night and much of the credit goes to SU senior Nathaniel Rose. TED is about great ideas worth spreading, but it always takes someone to bring it all together.
The event, held at the Herg Auditorium on the SU campus, featured great talks from a wide spectrum of disciplines. The post-show event took over the second floor of Newhouse III with virtual reality demonstrations, a live DJ, food stations, informal conversations between speakers and attendees, and a photo booth.
Rose is studying computer science, but he will now also be known for throwing a great party.

The Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium was set up for a fashion show Friday night.
The Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium may be the most flexible interior space in the city. We’ve seen it used for class lectures, film screenings, music concerts, and next week it will be the site for TEDx Syracuse University. Last night the venue was adapted for the 2014 Fashion and Beauty Communications Milestone Fashion Show.

Comedian and television writer Larry Wilmore visited the Newhouse School to discuss his career last week. Wilmore’s resume includes ‘The Facts of Life, ‘In Living Color,’ ‘The Office,’ ‘Sister Sister,’ ‘The Bernie Mac Show,’ and he is currently the senior black correspondent for ‘The Daily Show.’ He was interviewed by SU Professor Charisse L’Pree.
