Sunday, October 19th, 2014Throwback Thursday
Thursday, October 16th, 2014“New York City is bigger, Chicago is windier, Atlanta is warmer, but of all the chocolate cities, Buffalo may be the baddest….”
-Rick James
We caught Soulive for the first time almost a decade ago. Their brand of funk is maybe the closest thing we’ve heard to the Sound of Minneapolis (The Time, The Revolution, Flyte Tyme Productions).
Neal Evans (above) and his brother are from Buffalo, where July 9th is considered Soulive Day.
In addition to the music, Evans also scores films (most recently “The Boomer List” by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders).
Cello Vision
Wednesday, October 15th, 2014Syracuse Fashion Weekend organizers did a great job blending live music/performance with their runway event. Here Gjilberta Lucaj puts on a mini-concert with a new spin on an old classic (at the MOST).
Flaunt Your Fashion
Friday, October 10th, 2014We have never seen the United Booty Foundation band, but one thing is for sure, their fans came prepared for the Disco revival at the Landmark Theater tonight. The band will play in Watertown tomorrow.
Tonight’s event kicked off with Syra-Snarl, a costume-themed fashion show coordinated by Lisa Marie Butler.
It’s a Love Thing
Friday, September 26th, 2014Fresh off their headline gig at Jazz in the City, The Donna Alford JaSSBand (featuring the husband/wife team of Reggie Siegler and Donna Alford) came to The Sitrus Lounge Friday and unleashed a brand new funk. One of the highlights of their set was a Michael Jackson medley, which carefully blended “Rock with You” and “Love Never Felt So Good.” The MJ set was so smooth we expected to see a hologram appear on stage.
Unfortunately, this was their only appearance at the Sitrus showcase this season.
The Das Effect
Friday, September 19th, 2014Das set up what she calls the “College Chat Room” during her visit. The College Chat is an Oprah/Charlie Rose table-type conversation for students. She encouraged students to get and stay out of their comfort zones. She also talked about her “Strait A’s” for college success. To learn more about her program, click here.
Throwback Thursday: Jimmy Who?
Thursday, September 18th, 2014We got to meet Jimmy Cavallo over the weekend. On stage he plays a mean sax, and has an energetic show with great jokes for someone almost 90. During his Saturday set he talked about appearing in the film Rock, Rock!”
He later told us he was the first white rock musician (with an all white band) to play Harlem’s Apollo Theater in 1956.
Fashionable and Nearly Famous
Tuesday, September 16th, 2014Here’s some more street fashion.
Nick Mulpagano and his sister-in-law Debbie did a medley of songs for the Italian Festival last week, and they dressed up as some fabulously fashionable stars.
Cuse before Cali
Sunday, September 7th, 2014Misterwives,featuring lead singer Mandy Lee, got a great send off today from the students during Juice Jam 2014. The band was the opening act for the music festival (which celebrated it’s 10th year). Tomorrow Misterwives will make their national television debut on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in L.A.
