Colleen and Erin Searson (Ottawa Valley Girls)

This is a post about two valley girls…

Ottawa (Ontario, Canada)Valley sisters Erin and Colleen Searson returned to the Syracuse Irish Festival this year, and were last night’s main stage entertainment.  Their show delivered one foot-stomping hit after another. Colleen and Erin were accompanied by band mates Danno O’Shea (drums) and Orianna Barbato (bass).

The band will play again during the festival today, then head off for other dates in the Midwest before returning to Ottawa in October.

Check out the interview with Erin and Colleen below, where they talk about their connection with Kitty Hoynes in Syracuse and their gigs in Spain.

The group are true ambassadors for Celtic and fiddle music.

The Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival ended with die-hard fans dancing beneath their umbrellas Saturday night.

Despite the steady shower, the fans that remained were treated to superb musicianship of and All-Star Super Jam band that included Gerald Veasley, Michael Wolff, Gil Parris, Dave Hanlon, Mark Nanni and more.

The session was recorded by Syracuse-native Tom Emmi, producer of Studio Jams.

Day One for the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival was all about dancing. From the early shows to the finale, and almost everywhere in between (including an impromptu session by some young dancers), bodies just seemed to be in motion.

Free Zumba Class, Each Wednesday during the lunch hour (Clinton Square)

Free Zumba Class,  Wednesdays during the lunch hour (Clinton Square)

How’s this for a lunch date.

Metro Fitness, under the direction of Randy Sabourin, has partnered with the City to offer free Zumba classes every Wednesday this summer (from 12:15 to 12:45) in Clinton Square.  Sabourin has been a personal fitness instructor downtown for about 20 years. He hopes the Zumba class and partnership will help get Central New York residents, especially those living and working downtown, in better shape.

The Metro Fitness club is located in Salina Place a few blocks from Clinton Square.

Despite serious humidity and hazy sun, men, women and children decided to sweat and dance their way thru lunch.

According to Sabourin, the class yesterday was one of the smaller classes so far (more than a dozen participants).  The classes began last month and will run thru Labor Day.

Singer Frank McComb was the headliner for the 2013 Syracuse Juneteenth Celebration

Singer Frank McComb was the headliner for the 2013 Syracuse Juneteenth Celebration

Although the city celebrated the event on Saturday, the official day for Juneteenth (June 19) is today.

On Saturday the city got it’s first taste of soul vocalist Frank McComb, who was part of the free festival.  The concert was held not too far from the Jerry Rescue Freedom Statue in historic Clinton Square.

Physically McComb resembles bassist Chris Walker and radio-personality Doug Banks.  He has his roots in gospel and dabbles in jazz, but he has a vocal and playing style most reminiscent of a mid-80s Stevie Wonder (or some at the venue said Donny Hathaway).

McComb further showed his generosity by choosing a few Syracuse-area musicians to share the stage and play during his set (including beast of the beats Stephen Bender and Brownskin Band’s Nate Brown).

Although the show stared a little late, the crowd had no problem following his groove.

According to a promoter at the show, look for McComb to make a return to the area in September.
