A Wembley Warm-Up

Kim “on the drums”

Former Pratt students Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino, better known as Harvest Records’ Matt and Kim, added legions of fans to their scream team yesterday during the Syracuse Juice Jam Festival. This was our first time seeing the group in action. We were pleasantly surprised.

Matt’s melodies and Kim’s ferocious beats provided kinetic heat during the outdoor performance and definitely warmed the stage for headliner Big Sean.

Next week the duo will travel to Chicago; next month they will play the UK (including a date at Wembley Arena with Fall Out Boy).

Here are some scenes from the final Jazz in the City concert, which was held at Le Moyne Plaza. This marked the unofficial end to the summer jazz season.

Karoke in the City from Syracuse in Focus on Vimeo.

There were a bounty of music choices on the menu last night: You could have checked out the inaugural concert at the Lakeview Ampitheater; or you could have taken in the final show at the NYS Fair Grandstand, but if you are a lover of smooth jazz, the normally serene Salt Springs neighborhood was the place to be on Thursday.

For the fourth and final installment of the Jazz in the City Series CNY Jazz invited Four 80 East with guest Jeff Kashiwa to Le Moyne Plaza. They came, they played, the conquered.

Listen to the clip above as the band encourages the crowd in a blissful karaoke session. Every summer has a soundtrack, and we will always associate “Ah, Ah, Ooo” with 2015.

The venue, and it’s abundant lawn space, was the perfect place to beat the heat and conclude the summer music season.

Apparently it’s okay to save the best for last.

When Alex Torres (far left) comes to town with his band, they certainly bring the party with them. They will appear at Jazz in the City tonight on the Westside.

WAER-FM’s Eric Cohen, Ioana Vitu and Mike Houston chill back stage on Day 1 of the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival.

The opening day of the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival was called Funky Friday and dedicated to the memory of local jazz guitarist, composer and bandleader Jeff Houston.  Jeff’s brother Mike talked about Jeff’s new recording before the shows at the Pomco main stage. Mike and Jeff played the 2011 Northeast Jazz and Wine Festival when they were known as the J Project.

Jazz Fest, Day 2: LSD takes us on a trip

The members of Lake Street Dive are young, but they have a mature sound that appealed to the Syracuse audience (young and old alike), especially the powerful vocals of Rachael Price (second from right).

Jazz Fest, Day 1: Confession

Buckwheat Zydeco on Percussion

Buckwheat on Percussion: who knew the brother was unce, tyce, and fee times a beast not just on the accordion, but also on the Hammond.

Here’s the answer to that age old question: who shot Buckwheat? Buckwheat Zydeco, that is. We did.  He is an incredible performer and showed out for a fantastic Syracuse show (with a few encores). Buckwheat (aka Stanley Dural Jr) was given a proclamation by Frank Malfitano last night which made Friday, July 17, 2015 Buckwheat Zydeco Day.

The band moves on to Canada for a few shows next week.

Robert Randolph

This is one of our favorite photos from this weekend’s NYS Blues Fest. Saturday’s headliner Robert Randolph conjures up a style that reminded us of another cool guitarist from another era, Dez Dickerson.
