Darryl Dawkins aka Chocolate Thunder

We can vividly remember tipping into OnaJava about a decade ago to find Darryl Dawkins, aka Chocolate Thunder, chillin’ at the counter.  He was a big man with a big personality to match, and helped pave the way for Lebron and Shaq.  Dawkins was the first high school player to be drafted to the NBA (1975).

The folks at Newhouse told us big things were on the horizon for Larry Wilmore when he appeared here as part of the Conversation on Race and Entertainment Media series. Wilmore just celebrated his 100th episode of “The Nightly Show” earlier this week. Here’s an interview he did on “Fresh Air.”

Jazz in the City (part 3)

Friday, August 21st, 2015

Sure it was hot; sure the party got forced inside due to the rain; and sure the summer is nearly over, but the party must continue…

And that’s just what happened inside the St. Lucy’s Auditorium, as Jazz in the City stormed onto the Westside scene last night. The night was memorable thanks to some upbeat, tropical sounds from Alex Torres and his Latin Orchestra, as well as some great dancing by instructors from La familia de La Salsa.

For a few hours the far side of the Connective Corridor was full of the joyous kind of celebration that conjures up memories of never-ending summer evenings.

Just in case you missed it, the final Jazz in the City is schedule for Sept 3, and Alex Torres will be performing next week at the NYS Fair.
