Sunday, October 20th, 2013We hear a lot about progress in the city, but here’s an interesting view of people on the street by Syracuse Media Group’s Kevin Rivoli that shows the power of photography.
Interpreter
Saturday, October 19th, 2013You didn’t have to be a fan of classical music or chamber music to enjoy the performance by Haitian-American composer violinist and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain last night. His goal since age 5 has been to make the violin cool so it can be real; make it real so it can be relevant; and be relevant so he can build relationships.
Last night he made some new fans (from elementary school age to the upper decades) by interpreting everything from classic pieces, hip hop music, the national anthem of two countries and even the paintings on the gallery walls.
Roumain has worked with Luther Campbell, Bill T. Jones, Paul Miller (DJ Spooky) and many more.
His performance was part of the on-going series at the Community Folk Art Center (CFAC) exploring the music of the African Diaspora.
Stay tuned for an interview with Roumain, which will be published soon.
Engaged

–One Word that Will Change Your Life

The city gave a farewell flash mob for Nancy Cantor today at three locations: The Warehouse, City Hall, and Syracuse Stage.
If there was one word that can describe her tenure it was engage. Cantor engaged the alumni, students, sports fans, the government, the environmentalists, urbanites, artists, and several of our neighborhoods.
Most important, Cantor engaged our attention. Her leadership showed us more was possible.
Up Close & Personal
Thursday, October 17th, 20132013 Urban Video Project artist-in-residence Dani Leventhal screened several of her short films tonight at the Everson Museum’s Hosmer Auditorium. We found the family anti-drama “17 New Dam Road” the most thought-provoking. The Q+A portion of the evening was cut short, however, Leventhal met with her fans outside on the patio. A steady rain kept the crowd under the awning, but those with umbrellas could venture onto the plaza to re-watch her CNY-centric film “Platonic,” which was projected onto the Everson’s north wall.

Tuesday, October 15th, 2013New Inspiration for the Nation’s George Kilpatrick held a “Power Schmooze” event this evening at the Jamerican Diner, located at 415 East Washington Street. The guests were treated to home-made Jamaican fruit punch and samples of sweet cheese bread and savory jerk chicken.
The cozy spot on the edge of downtown maybe one of the best kept gastronomic secrets along the Connective Corridor. If you are planning a foodie tour of center city, this place would be a great place to kick it off.

Monday, October 14th, 2013We saw these promo pieces downtown last week and found out the Salt Market (Syracuse) will be setting up shop at 499 Warren Street on Saturday, October 19.
