In the Zone

Tuesday, May 10th, 2016

Two members of Clarion Associates (Denver, CO) gave a brief overview of the Rezone Syracuse project last night. The group is attempting to help the city better define its character and sense of place as it relates to land use and future development.

According to initial assessment, Syracuse is “behind the curve” and we need to create more user-friendly ordinances. Our current system even has obsolete districts.

We were surprised to find out that modernization is a long time coming (there’s not been a comprehensive update since the 1920s).

And of course there is also potential for consolidation of some districts.

Clarion began their work in the Fall of 2015 and will submit their final recommendations in 2017.

Hopefully this project can help bring some creativity to city planning.

We are all environmentalists (even if we don’t know it)

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016

Dr. K. Animashaun Ducre (left), a professor at SU, introduced environmental justice advocate Robert Bullard, Ph.D. at a recent John L. Johnson lecture.

The first rule of environmental justice, according to Dr. Robert Bullard (considered the father of the movement), is that people must speak for themselves and those who are most impacted must be inside the room.

He was one of the organizers of the First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit in 1991.

Bullard’s lecture, which was sponsored by the Department of African American Studies and given about 1 week before Earth Day, attempted to connect the dots of pollution between Flint, MI and historical examples in Warren County NC, Whispering Pines (Houston, Tx) and Moosville, LA.

His detailed analysis showed how we often talk “green,” but still act “dirty” when it comes to environmental justice in certain locales.

On his birthday Joe Driscoll got to perform for about 5,000 people at the ONCenter. He also opened for Sen. Bernie Sanders, who was in town for a campaign stop. We knew Driscoll was master of the live loop sample and the beatbox. We had know idea he was an effective political organizer.

Actor Rosario Dawson gave a fiery, sophisticated, and informed speech before introducing Bernie Sanders in Syracuse today. Can a run for office be on the horizon, or at least a speaking slot during the Democratic Convention in Philly.
