George Weiss, Founder, Say Yes to Education, Inc.
The Say Yes to Education (Syracuse) celebrated a five-year anniversary yesterday with a program at John T. Roberts School. The event featured speeches by Say Yes Founder George Weiss, educators, politicians, and a few initial graduates. Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor cited the Say Yes program as a metaphor for Syracuse as a “city of opportunity.”
Current and former Syracuse City School Superintendents Sharon Contreras and Daniel Lowengard speak about the success of Say Yes.
Below is an inspiring speech by Amber Jackson, an inaugural Say Yes Scholar and 2013 graduate of Hobart William Smith Colleges.

Syracuse Fire Department’s Engine No. 7 comes to the End of the Road. This morning the crew cleaned out the remaining equipment and headed to other squads within the city. Engine Company No. 7 was our neighborhood (Midtown) station, and the service and professionalism will be missed.

Marilyn Higgins, VP of Community Engagement and Economic Development for Syracuse University
Marilyn Higgins, along with Linda Dickerson Hartsock and Maarten Jacobs, spoke last week about how the University has used innovative design, neighborhood dialogue and unlikely coalitions (creative placemaking) to promote a climate of innovation in Syracuse. The event was held in the City Hall Commons Atrium. Higgins discussed how the new narratives of the Near Westside Initiative and Connective Corridor have ignited confidence in how the city views itself.

LOFO Cafe/Bistro: Inside Out
A few months ago I ventured into Armory Square to revisit Om Boys Juice Bar, only to find it had closed. New owners were onsite and explained their concept. I was skeptical and went for a smoothie.
Fast forward and (after numerous meals) LOFO, to me, may be the most underrated place in the city for flexitarian food. Reminds me of a cross between a place in NYC that was called Pump and Juicy Lucy’s in San Francisco.
LOFO is definitely a great addition to Syracuse dining. I’m glad I stumbled upon it.

West Fayette Street (Rush Hour) Tuesday
Here’s an interesting question overheard along the Connective Corridor: If downtown traffic congestion at rush hour for the past few months has been moderate to severe (690 on ramp construction), what would it look like if they tore down Route I81?
