Today was the first day for the 2013 Syracuse Nationals. Traditionally after the show people gather in and around Electronics Parkway in Liverpool (particularly the hotels) to check out the hot rods and classic rides.
As usual there were plenty of sparkling Camaros, Caddy’s and Plymouth muscle cars on display, however, an unlikely pair of undersized foreign cars drew a lot of attention this evening, including a turbo-charged 1966 Fiat 600 (see below).

Free Zumba Class, Wednesdays during the lunch hour (Clinton Square)
How’s this for a lunch date.
Metro Fitness, under the direction of Randy Sabourin, has partnered with the City to offer free Zumba classes every Wednesday this summer (from 12:15 to 12:45) in Clinton Square. Sabourin has been a personal fitness instructor downtown for about 20 years. He hopes the Zumba class and partnership will help get Central New York residents, especially those living and working downtown, in better shape.
The Metro Fitness club is located in Salina Place a few blocks from Clinton Square.
Zumba Instructor Lynn Underwood sets the pace.
Despite serious humidity and hazy sun, men, women and children decided to sweat and dance their way thru lunch.
According to Sabourin, the class yesterday was one of the smaller classes so far (more than a dozen participants). The classes began last month and will run thru Labor Day.

Comedian Bruce Bruce will return to Syracuse this weekend for a series of shows at the Funnybone. This photo is from a show he did at the Landmark theater about a decade ago produced by the Pride of Syracuse Newspaper.

Omanii Abdullah, poet, educator and businessman (performing at the former OnaJava Cafe)
Syracuse is a city of families. On this Throwback Thursday I want to give some dap to the Grace family. Each summer poet, educator and actor Omanii Abdullah sets up his hot dog stand near my office. He’s as famous for his country-style lemonade as he is for his spoken word performances. Omanii has specials at his stand, and one of my favorites is the Uncle Vince. It’s named for his brother Vincent Grace, who sadly passed away a few years ago. Vincent was a karate master who influenced a generation of fighters here in the city.

The Muhammad School of Music visited Syracuse from Buffalo (center Min. Mark Muhammad and Henri L. Muhammad) and held a rehearsal before their performance.
Here are two scenes inside the Merchants Common Building (downtown). The Muhammad School of Music visited the School of the heARTS about a decade ago, and currently the Syracuse Media Group (and Post Standard) has nearly completed their move to the property.
