SU Press recently published a book by environmental activist Dr. K. Animashaun Ducre titled A Place Called Home.

The book examines cycles of disruption and dislocation in Syracuse.  It began with a study Dr. Ducre conducted using a blended methodology of photo voice (visual story-telling) and mapping (geographic analysis). Dr. Ducre talks in this interview about the characters in the book (women from Syracuse’s South side) and her efforts to bear witness to social injustice.

He discussed stereotype threats and the significants of identity from his book Whistling Vivaldi. Real excellence comes from a diversity of perspectives, he said. Journalist Roland Martin led a discussion at Syracuse University this evening about his career and current issues in journalism.  During his opening Martin stressed the importance of personal credibility, diverse voices to tell stories and taking advantage of multi-talents as a journalist/business person.

Jackie Robinson, a pioneer in television journalismIn NYC yesterday she was honored along with with legendary journalists such as Mike Wallace and Len Berman. Tonight, Hall of Fame journalist Jackie Robinson was the honoree at a community celebration for her retirement here in Syracuse.  The roster of speakers and honors included representatives from the Mayor’s Office, Syracuse University, the Newhouse School, community leaders and the Onondaga County Legislature.

She was called out for being not only a great role model, but also a community activist and a great mother and wife.

The celebration will continue tomorrow when a portion of James Street will be named in Robinson’s honor (Jackie Robinson Way).
