5 MAY 2000--Cynthia Jane Richardson, a friend of Syracuse in focus, was recently honored at the Auburn Cayuga NAACP's 32nd Annual Freedom Fund Banquet as the citizen of the year.

The event was held at the Springside Inn in nearby Auburn, NY and attended by local dignitaries as well as family, friends and colleagues of the Richardson family.

The following is an excerpt from a bio written by her daughter Gina:

Janie, as she is affectionately called by her family and friends, was born April 16, 1947 to Walter Burton and Gertrude Ann in Auburn. She was educated in Auburn public schools and upon graduation attended Oswego State University. After graduating in 1969, Janie began teaching the Auburn School district, where she's taught for 30 years. She currently teaches 2nd grade at William H. Seward Elementary School and is presently the only African-American teacher in the school district.

Ms. Richardson has dedicated herself to her family, her community and her career. She's an inspiration to all of us.
